[VIDEO] Worldwide Demand for Handheld Ultrasound Rises

Emergency physicians around the world have experienced firsthand the effectiveness of ultrasound to screen for pneumonia and cardiac complications related to COVID-19.  As a result, Clarius and other handheld ultrasound companies have seen a surge in demand for their products.

For example, to support rural and acute care physicians across the province of British Columbia, Clarius is delivering more than 80 wireless handheld ultrasound scanners to help quickly diagnose COVID-19.

Specifically in the time of COVID, we find it incredibly helpful to be able to take this tiny device into these rooms that are sealed with negative pressure to protect the staff and other patients and we can acquire our ultrasound images in a tiny space,” said Dr Oron Frenkel from St. Paul’s emergency department in Vancouver, British Columbia.

This week, we were delighted to welcome a news reporter from CTV News to our manufacturing facility. Shannon Paterson came by to learn more about how Clarius is meeting the increased global demand for handheld ultrasound.  Watch her story.

For decades, ultrasounds have been large, expensive machines on wheeled carts. A Burnaby company is changing that, with a small, handheld ultrasound that can be connected to a mobile device. (CTV)

In addition to responding to increased demand from hospitals, Clarius continues to produce scanners for specialists who operate private clinics including physiotherapists, urologists, obstetricians and gynecologists. With the cost of ultrasound as low as $4,900 USD, more physicians are able to offer ultrasound to improve patient care, reduce wait times and decrease costs.

I absolutely think this is the future,” said Frenkel. “I think handheld, point-of-care ultrasound is probably the most disruptive technology in the clinical encounter between physician and patient since the invention of the stethoscope 200 years ago.”
