[VIDEO] World Champion Inline Speed Skater Daniel Greig on Using Clarius Ultrasound to Image Athletes Performing at the Winter Games

Daniel Greig represented Australia in the 2018 Winter Games at PyeongChang. He is still today’s reigning world champion for inline skating. Competing since he was six years old, the South-Australian won two gold medals for inline speed skating at the Junior World Championships.

Having recovered from severe injuries sustained four years ago, you now find Greig coaching elite athletes to help them reach their full potential by applying new technologies to their training programs. We caught up with Greig while working with Dr. Craig Kenneth Vincent and high-performance EU speed skaters in preparation for the 2022 Winter Games. Greig shared his excitement about the use of Clarius HD wireless ultrasound for sports medicine.

Clarius can be very useful for coaches and athletes because it allows you to immediately assess an athlete, even a muscle, at the moment that an adverse incident occurs,” explains Greig.

While ultrasound is commonly used to assess MSK injuries after they happen, Greig is perhaps most excited about the regular use of high-definition ultrasound to predict and prevent injuries before becoming detrimental to athletes.

I’ve been aware of using medical grade instruments to do assessments of potential adverse effects and risk factors, but this was an entirely new application that’s really activated my imagination. It’s actually possible to assess the acute inflammation level that occurs in tendons and joints post exercise, and compare that to baseline values in order to determine whether an athlete might be at risk of a later more serious pathology.”

Daniel Greig’s Three Recommendations for Using Handheld Ultrasound During Sports Training.

  1. Take a baseline of important structures prior to exercise.
  2. Check for changes in tissue structures post exercise.
  3. Uncover risk factors in athletes before they occur.

During the session, Dr. Vincent recorded educational videos using the Clarius L15 for Clarius Classroom. In this video, Dr. Kenneth Vincent performs an ultrasound of a Daniel’s knee immediately following a 30 minute high-intensity skate. He stresses the importance of having access to ultrasound to look for pathological changes in the anterior knee compared to baseline study.

Handheld Ultrasound for MSK Clinicians
