A quick scan of the inferior vena cava (IVC) can be helpful in evaluating patients presenting with dyspnea, dehydration, or abnormal vital signs. The IVC is a large vein that carries deoxygenated blood from the lower half of the body to the right atrium of the heart. Image just lateral to midline below the xiphoid process to evaluate size and respiratory variation. Respiratory variation is assessed by measuring the diameter of the IVC during inspiration and expiration.
