hello my name's dr camilla edwards from first opinion veterinary ultrasound and today i'm going to teach you how to scan the kidneys and the bladder so we'll start with the left kidney so first of all we place the probe behind the zippy sternum pointing slightly cranially towards the liver and then we slide the probe up the costal arch so just follow that rib cage we sit then see the stomach the next organ we see is the spleen and then finally before we reach the lumbar musculature we see the left kidney once we've made slight rotations um to get the best longitudinal image we can we can freeze the image and measure the length of the kidney from the caudal pole to the cranial pole once we've decided on the length of the kidney we can fan all the way through in both directions and to see in that longitudinal plane to get the transverse plane we rotate the probe 90 degrees and here we get a good view of the pelvis with this v-shaped anechoic structure and again we fan all the way through in both directions to see the full kidney in transverse
