Clarius Leader Spotlight: Monica Rye, Vice President of People and Talent

By Clarius CEO Ohad Arazi

In every area of our company, Clarius has been growing by leaps and bounds. I’m excited to welcome new members of our leadership team to help support our rapid growth including Monica Rye, VP of People and Talent. I recently had the opportunity to sit with Monica to learn about her philosophies on building and supporting a high-performance team that loves working at Clarius. Read on for her insights on how working in the medical sector can help improve the employee experience.

What interested you about this position in the medical technology sector?

I’ve never worked in the medical space before and it’s interesting to be learning about a new industry. I love the opportunity to be a part of an organization that is a disrupter and I look forward to helping to shape the future of Clarius.

The Clarius device itself is interesting to me. My experience with ultrasound exams is limited to those performed by cart-based systems. I also expect to have to wait weeks to have an ultrasound exam performed and that’s terrifying for patients. So, the concept of walking into my doctor’s office and having her perform the exam with a handheld device and having immediate answers is mind blowing. I’m in awe of the positive social impact handheld ultrasound can have on our medical system. I’m excited about the real possibility of revolutionizing the medical imaging space.”

How is working for a medical device company going to shape your People and Talent strategies?

I think that working for a company that can have a positive impact on healthcare helps people connect immediately with the “why we work here”. I feel it’s important to build a strategy that lives and breathes the why – because the work we do has the real possibility of improving people’s lives. We want to recruit people who really buy into the why and connect to it. We must make sure that our policies and programs also connect to our purpose because the culture of a company and our values is essential to the employee experience. In my experience, connecting to the why improves engagement and ultimately, it’s our team that is responsible for our success as a company.”

Could you give us the 10,000-foot view of your role at Clarius?

I feel my job is to lead the development of a best-in-class people and talent strategy to support our growth. For most businesses, and it’s especially true of Clarius, your people are your greatest asset. Yes, we already have a superior medical device that people love and that’s fantastic. But it’s our people who are building it and going to get it out of the door and providing great customer service. They’re the ones responsible for continuing to innovate and take it to the next level. My role is to continue to foster a strong employee experience.”

How do you think the People and Talent team will evolve under your leadership?

I don’t have a specific agenda or policies and practices to implement because I want to make sure that I really understand the organization and any changes we do, make sense for the business. My vision is to move our People and Talent team’s service model from a transactional one to becoming more of a strategic partner, that will provide a proactive approach to the leaders of the business. Allowing them to focus on what they need to do, to move the business forward. An example of this might be, ensuring we have programs in place to build leaders that can successfully support the growth of Clarius.”

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

I spend a lot of time with my family. When I’m not perfecting my skills as an Uber driver or bank machine for my children, I am inside hockey rinks or at track and field with my kids. When I have time, I like to be at the gym, working in the garden or binge-watching my favourite shows.”
