[VIDEO] Five Reasons Why Dr. Tom Cook Likes Clarius Ultrasound for EMED

Whenever the Clarius research and development team is designing a new ultrasound product, Dr. Tom Cook, an emergency physician and ultrasound educator, tends to be a reliable sounding board for what works best in a large trauma center in the United States. That’s why he was one of the first physicians to use the new dual array Clarius PAL HD3 whole-body wireless handheld ultrasound scanner.

This brand-new scanner that has two probes in one is an incredible breakthrough,” says Tom Cook. “By combining phased array and linear array in the same device you can probably do 95 to 99% of all the ultrasound scanning, whatever imaging you’re doing, with this single device. And you can do it with something that is an extraordinarily reasonable cost. Hand carried systems are the future. Clinicians are much more likely to use ultrasound when they can pull it from their pocket for the exam instead of pushing a big cart into a small trauma room.”

Watch our 3-minute interview with Dr. Tom Cook to learn more about what he had to say about Clarius ultrasound. Or read on to learn the 5 reasons why he recommends Clarius ultrasound for use in hospitals.

1. “Number one by far is image quality”

Clarius gets you images like you’re using a much more expensive system. And this is sort of what everybody fears, right? They’re going to go to a handheld device, they’ll go to a cordless device and they’ll think the image quality is going to suffer. And image quality is sort of the sex appeal of ultrasound. Everybody likes the best image they can get and they think there’s a huge trade-off, but there really isn’t. The images that you’re going to get on this device are really comparable to what you would see in cart-based systems.”

2. “You’re promoting quality of care because people are more likely to do the studies”

What do you think the biggest barrier is to getting people to use ultrasound when they should? A lot of times it just comes down to the simple fact that they don’t like to take that big cart and push it in the room, set it up, plug it in, turn it on, choose the transducer, all these other things that are going on. They’re much more likely to grab that scanner if it’s just sitting in a charger or sitting in their pocket and they’ll walk in the room and take it out and immediately do that exam.”

With Clarius, being able to integrate both the phased array and linear array technology into a single transducer, that means you only have to carry that transducer around for almost all the studies that you’re going to do at the bedside.

3. “The more I used a cordless transducer, the more I liked it”

I realized that the cord always kind of gets in the way. It tends to break a lot. It’s the dirtiest thing around, it’s hard to wrap up and keep it in your pocket. So, I really like the fact that it’s cordless.”

4. “The other thing that I really love about Clarius is their archive system”

You can go in to Clarius Cloud, do your study, complete it, document your findings, and then by literally just hitting a button, it’s going to push those images up into the net and archive your images so you can pull them back, move them around, send them to other clinicians. You’re getting this extraordinary ease of moving that data and archiving it so that you can recall it later or share it with other healthcare professionals.”

5. “You’re saving money because it’s much, much cheaper without sacrificing image quality”

If you compare the cost of this device to a cart-based system, you’re talking a factor of 10 to 15, maybe even 20, depending on the type of system you’re using. So, it’s very, very inexpensive. This scanner is fantastic. Everybody’s very, very excited about it in my department, and I really look forward to seeing where this thing is going to take us over the next five to 10 years.”

Clarius PAL HD3 Whole-Body Ultrasound for Emergency Medicine

Clarius PAL HD3 enables the highest-quality imaging of the whole body with one ultrasound scanner. It combines the Clarius PA HD3 scanner for deep imaging with the Clarius L15 HD3, its most popular high-frequency linear scanner, for clear superficial imaging. You can toggle without interruption between shallow and superficial imaging with the press of a button and a slight realignment of the scanner head.
