3 Physicians Using Handheld Ultrasound to Deliver Better Patient Care

Today, in honor of National Doctor’s Day, we would like to recognize three physicians we’ve worked with during the past 12 months. These physicians have dedicated many hours honing their point-of-care ultrasound skills to deliver better patient care. What’s more, they’re working with us to share their skills with other physicians by delivering educational ultrasound webinars and to record ultrasound video tutorials for Clarius Classroom. Read on to meet some of our trailblazing healthcare heroes.

Dr. MJ Rowland-Warmann, Aesthetic Medicine

Dr Rowland-Warmann, BDS, BSc, MSc, Aes. Med, MClin, Dent Orthod, PGDip Endod, PGCert MedEd, Dip. MJDF, is the founder and lead clinician at Smileworks Liverpool. Initially qualifying as a dentist, she has subsequently completed Master’s degrees in Orthodontics and Aesthetic Medicine. Her practice is limited to non-surgical aesthetics where her special area of interest is the management of dermal filler complications using ultrasound.

I want to be able to look my patients in the eye and tell them I did everything I could to keep them safe,” says Dr. MJ Rowland-Warmann in response to a question about why she began using ultrasound at her aesthetics practice.

Dr. Tom Cook, Emergency Physician

Dr. Cook trained in emergency medicine residency at Fort Hood, Texas before taking on a rugged three-year tour at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. After leaving the army in 1996 he joined the emergency department staff at Palmetto Health where he initially developed the emergency ultrasound curriculum and then founded the nationally recognized 3rd Rock Ultrasound and the Emergency Ultrasound Course.

Dr. Cook often carries a Clarius handheld ultrasound scanner in his pocket for quick exams and to guide vascular access.

When ultrasound is in your lab coat and you can pull it out of your pocket and you can take your phone out and suddenly get this great exam, you’ll just find you’re using it a lot more,” he explains. “I tend to use a phased array almost exclusively because I can cover the chest, I can cover the thorax, I can cover the abdomen, I can cover the retroperitoneum, I can cover the pelvis and at least nudge myself in the right direction.”

Dr. Alan Hirahara, Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Alan Hirahara, MD, FRCSC, is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in arthroscopic shoulder surgery and sports medicine. He runs a busy private practice in Sacramento, California. Dr. Hirahara speaks and teaches nationally and internationally, with published research on arthroscopic shoulder and knee surgery, orthobiologics and the use of ultrasound. Dr. Hirahara is board certified in both orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine in both the United States and Canada.

Dr. Hirahara has been using ultrasound since 2009 and hopes to see more of his colleagues using ultrasound guidance.

A lot of really, really good surgeons don’t think they need to use ultrasound, but I’ve learned that it’s a tool that all of us could use to do a better job,” he says. “I started using ultrasound when I saw that surgeons in other parts of the world were far head of us. They were using it to analyze the structure of tissues, tendons, muscles, and ligaments prior to administering orthobiologics treatments and were achieving better results.”
