According to ACEP, ocular emergencies account for 3% of all ED visits. Using ultrasound to examine the eye is quick, non-invasive, and can be performed on patients with eye pain, loss of vision, headache, or trauma, replacing the need for fundoscopic exams. In this webinar, we explore how to use wireless ultrasound to rapidly assess for retinal detachment or vitreous hemorrhage.
For traumatic injury to a lower extremity, ultrasound-guided femoral nerve blocks are highly effective for pain control and reduce the risk of complications associated with opioids. You’ll learn to use ultrasound to easily identify the femoral nerve, fascia iliaca, and your needle, to ensure safe and accurate guided injections.
Although CT is considered the gold standard for diagnosing acute bowel abnormalities like appendicitis and small bowel obstruction, POCUS is quickly becoming the go-to diagnostic tool for emergency physicians due to its low cost, availability, and absence of ionizing radiation. In several studies, ultrasound has been shown to decrease morbidity and length of stay in the emergency department. We explore ultrasound scanning techniques to rapidly diagnose appendicitis and identify small bowel obstructions.
Obesity, IV drug abuse, hypovolemia, and anatomical variation are all factors that can make blind or landmark-guided PIV access challenging. Drs. Frenkel and Johnson will demonstrate how to use ultrasound to clearly visualize vascular structures and guide cannula insertion to avoid complications like arterial puncture, contact with nerves, and bruising.

Dr. Brian Johnson, MD, is an experienced Emergency Medicine Specialist located in Renton, WA, known for his dedicated work in the field. He earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine in 2010 and specializes in Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Hospital Medicine. Dr. Johnson holds board certification in Emergency Medicine and further expanded his skills with an ultrasound fellowship following his residency training.

Oron Frenkel, M.D., M.S.
Dr. Oron Frenkel completed his MS and MD simultaneously at the University of California Joint Medical Program in Berkeley and San Francisco, completing his residency in Emergency Medicine followed by a fellowship in Point-of-Care Ultrasound at Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland, California. He moved to British Columbia with the goal of increasing use of point-of-care ultrasound across the province, especially among rural practitioners. An avid educator, Dr. Frenkel is constantly evaluating the best teaching methods for disseminating this technology, how to measure competency in its practice, and its effects on outcomes for individual patients. Dr. Frenkel serves as Chairman of the Clarius Medical Advisory Board.
