Plastic Surgeon Resolves 10-Year-Old Filler Complication Using Clarius Ultrasound

Sandra Wood struggled to look down at her feet due to the extreme swelling under her eyes and cheeks. That is, until she met Dr. Steven Weiner, a board-certified head and neck surgeon who is now dedicated to aesthetic procedures.

Sandra came to me with a problem that she’s had for years, which she didn’t know was related to a 10-year-old filler,” says Dr. Weiner. “She thought her swollen cheeks were the result of weight gain or aging. After I performed an ultrasound exam under her eye, or periocular area, I immediately saw there was filler and I was so happy that I could treat her and get almost immediate relief of her symptoms. I injected her with a dissolver called Hylenex, or hyaluronidase, and within 48 hours, she was significantly better.”

Dr. Weiner uses the Clarius L20 high-frequency ultrasound scanner, which he considers ideal for facial aesthetic procedures with its ability to provide high-definition images to a maximum depth of four centimeters. To treat filler complications quickly and effectively, Dr. Weiner uses Clarius to quickly identify fillers and to guide his injections precisely into the pocket of filler.

Watch Dr. Weiner’s 1-minute interview to learn more about how he successfully treated Sandra under ultrasound guidance:

Filler is sometimes very difficult to see in ultrasound, but HA filler – she had Juvéderm – is very easy to pick up with the Clarius L20,” he explains. “It’s anechoic, black and it shows up very well on the L20.”

Sandra was back a week after the first treatment for a follow-up exam during which Dr. Weiner found a small amount of remaining filler, which he re-injected with Hylenex. She was filler-free on her next visit.

I felt like I looked like a cabbage patch doll,” says Sandra Wood. “When I looked down, I’d have to turn my whole head to see the floor. I couldn’t just shift my eyes downward to see the floor. And I noticed underneath my eyes that I had a blue tint. Dr. Weiner explained to me that it was called the Tyndall effect. After he did the ultrasound and dissolved the fillers, it has dramatically improved. Before that, concealer wouldn’t even help.”
