Clarius Mobile Health announced the recipients for the Medical School Award (MSA) over the weekend, due to the cancellation of this year’s World Congress of Ultrasound in Medical Education (WCUME). The program received around 100 registrations and 4 applicants were selected. The Platinum Awards have been granted to SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn, New York and the University of California in San Diego, California. The Gold Awards have been granted to Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio and Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In total, over $250,000 worth of Clarius equipment will be delivered to these 4 medical schools.
Clarius started its MSA award program to support the use of handheld ultrasound in medical schools. “We recognize the value of introducing ultrasound technology early in the medical curriculum and are excited to support ultrasound education programs with our technology,” said Laurent Pelissier, Chairman and CEO of Clarius. All the applicants showed great dedication in advancing the future of medical education. Applicants indicated that Clarius scanners would bridge the gap between the first-year anatomical studies and the fourth-year clinical bedside experience. They also noted that Clarius Cloud, an online exam management portal, would help facilitate student learning.

Clarius is dedicated to help overcome some of the shortcomings faced in these medical schools today. “The biggest challenge we face with the current curriculum is a drastically inappropriate student to transducer ratio,” according to SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. “Ultrasound will literally bring students to the bedside,” an excerpt from the Sidney Kimmel Medical College submission states. “Clarius — is poised to impact provider practice patterns, to expose clinicians to a new paradigm of care.”

SUNY Downstate College of Medicine has a long history of bedside medicine training, however as a public institution has lacked the funding to integrate ultrasound into their medical education. This award will help a program of 200+ students per class and 900 + students across four years, integrate ultrasound training into their unmatched hands-on clinical experience.
About the University of California San Diego School of Medicine in San Diego, California
University of California San Diego School of Medicine integrated ultrasound education into their program in 2014 for the first two years of the medical school curriculum. The Clarius award will allow the school to implement a cohesive and contiguous curriculum into the 3rd and 4th years. The Clarius scanners will be incorporated into the clerkships of internal medicine, emergency medicine, critical care medicine and an overseas elective rotation in Brazil.

The Ohio State University College of Medicine has a long history of teaching ultrasound to medical students, the OSUCOM program advocates for the safe and early use of ultrasound in medicine and the requisite benefits from the integration of point of care ultrasound. This award will support their expanding extracurricular ultrasound activities, allowing the medical students to step up into leadership roles and to provide peer to peer teaching using the Ultrasound Division’s established framework for ultrasound education.
