Detect urinary retention with a post-void residual or identify blood/masses in the bladder. As a fluid filled structure, it is usually easy to find by aiming into pelvis above pubic symphysis.

in a patient with suspected urinary retention or urinary hesitancy a quick scan of the bladder can identify visually estimating the bladder volume and calculating post-void residual very quickly to do this scan i'm going to use a curvilinear scanner and i'm on the bladder preset i put the indicator towards the patient's right above the pubic bone and aim into the pelvis until a large fluid-filled structure is identified to signify the bladder once i get its maximal diameter and view i can freeze the image and go put on my calipers i can choose pre-void or post void residual as necessary and start putting calipers on when i click on the image the set of calipers will show up and i just have to slide them into place once i get my cross marks roughly in view i can save it by pressing on the camera icon and then i will unfreeze the image and keeping the bladder in view i'll rotate into the sagittal plane with the indicator towards the patient's head making sure i get both walls of the bladder in view click back on and go back into pre-void place my third caliper on and once i'm there at the top i have the automated calculated volume of 189 cc's i can click the camera to save the image to record the recording as i need after i've recorded it i can have the patient go void and repeat the same procedure as a post void residual if that's what i'm looking to do and then i can confidently assess whether the patient really does have signs of urinary retention or not
