i'm oran frankel an emergency physician in patients presenting with shoulder pain and limitations to their range of motion the point of care ultrasound can be an invaluable tool in diagnosis and management today i'll show how to screen for rotator cuff impingement i'll use a linear scanner here on a shoulder preset and i start to scan always the anterior humeral area finding the bicep tendon i'll follow it up into the rotator interval and then rotate the scanner into to visualize the rotator cuff itself sliding it back i'll find the acromion at which point i can actually in real time watch the patient's range of motion all the way up and down looking for any signs of impingement as the rotator cuff slides through and under the acromion if i see any hold up i have definitive evidence that this patient is suffering from shoulder impingement you
