Lateral Meniscus and Knee Effusion

Oron Frenkel, MD

A lateral knee joint lesion has created a marked capsular effusion, suggestive of a lateral meniscus tear.

Specialties: MSK
Applications: MSK
in this video we see a linear scanner on the musculoskeletal preset placed on the lateral joint line of the knee and here we have the femur and here's the tibia and we're immediately struck at this discontinuity and cortical irregularity suggestive of osteophytes associated with degenerative joint disease and osteoarthritis right here is the lateral meniscus and there is some associated edema around it above that superficial we'll see the lateral collateral ligament appears to be intact as we scan we can really appreciate that discontinuity of the bone these osteophytes here we don't see an obvious defect in the lateral meniscus but there is this associated lateral joint effusion which as we scan lateral and now superior up towards the patella across the patellar tendon and suprapatellar here now where you are in the super patellar recess we see a quite copious joint diffusion associated with his lateral lesion all to suggest likely a lateral joint injury and highly suggestive of a lateral meniscus tear you
