hi my name is Shelly point of care ultrasound is a quick and non-invasive way to evaluate for the most common Opthalmic pathologies so to Image the Eye I'm using the pal phased array linear scanner and you'll see that it's in the linear setting I'm also using the ocular preset now for safety reasons maximum levels for thermal and mechanical indices which are determined by the usfda are lower for scanning the eye because of the way the eye experiences ultrasounds thermal effects we have those uh limits built right into the ocular preset so you want to make sure that you're using the correct preset so to scan the eye I've placed a large amount of gel over the patient's closed eyelid and I will just start scanning so right away we can see the eyeball we can see the anterior chamber the iris and pupil the lens and if I decrease my depth that allows us to see all the way to the back of the eye including the optic nerve now if I was looking for a retinal detachment I would see free floating retina on one or both sides of that optic nerve keeping in mind that it's Tethered to the optic nerve and in cases of vitous hemorrhage you may see a membrane or echogenic debris floating around within the vitus body and especially if the patient moves his eye back and forth that would help demonstrate those loose bodies or echogenic debris so as you can see the pal is an excellent choice for doing a quick and thorough examination of the eye
