i'm oran frankel an emergency physician in patients presenting with ankle pain identifying ankle effusions can be really challenging with clinical examination alone using the point of care ultrasound i can confidently identify ankle effusions at the bedside to do that i'm using a linear scanner here on the foot ankle setting and i'll follow the tibia down identifying its bony cortex down to the tipio-taylor junction from here i'll sweep across lateral and medial looking for any signs of black fluid bulging up out of the joint space when i don't see any i can feel confident that my patient does not have an ankle of fusion to chase with an arthrocentesis
