i'm oran frankel an emergency physician point of care ultrasound provides an amazing tool to visualize nerves and surrounding structures and then facilitate me doing procedures in real time watching my needle go where i want it to go i'm going to show how to visualize the ulnar nerve in preparation for an ulnar nerve block here i'm using a linear scanner on the nerve preset and i'll start in transverse here near the wrist first looking for the ulnar artery once i find it i know that the ulnar nerve usually lies on the ulnar aspect of that ulnar artery and keeping it in view i can scan proximally up the forearm to really find my ideal spot for injection what i like is where the nerve and artery start to diverge allowing me to insert my needle in real time avoiding intra-arterial injection enabling great pain control either in itself or in preparation for another procedure i need to do for this patient
