Is That a Kiwi or a Death Star? Small Animal Abdominal POCUS and Mucoceles
Join POCUS gurus Drs. Søren Boysen and Serge Chalhoub for an interactive, case-based journey into the mystery of gallbladder mucoceles. In this 1-hour webinar, participants will discover how abdominal point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) can screen for, characterize, and guide management of gallbladder mucoceles. Drs. Boysen and Chalhoub will:
- Describe the sonographic appearance of gallbladder mucoceles, from the classic “kiwi” and “wagon-wheel” patterns to more subtle presentations.
- Demonstrate how to incorporate the gallbladder into a routine abdominal POCUS screening exam.
- Discuss what to do—and what not to do—when a mucocele is identified, either incidentally or in a symptomatic patient.
- Review how dogs with bile peritonitis present on the clinic floor, with an emphasis on point-of-care diagnosis and stabilization.

Triage! This dog has an acute abdomen! Abdominal POCUS to the rescue! But wait! What’s that in the gallbladder? Is it a tomato? A kiwi? A bicycle wheel? Or is that the Death Star? It’s a mucocele!
When a dog presents with an acute abdomen, every minute matters. Abdominal POCUS lets you rapidly triage the unstable patient cage-side, but a gallbladder that looks like a kiwi, a tomato, or the Death Star can leave even experienced clinicians unsure what they’re looking at, and what to do next.
Is a mucocele found on screening cause for alarm, or an incidental finding that can be monitored? What does bile peritonitis look like when it hits your ultrasound probe and your triage list? Drs. Boysen and Chalhoub will break down the key findings, decision points, and pitfalls, so you can confidently work up the acute abdomen and know when a gallbladder needs more than a second look.
Drs. Boysen and Chalhoub will be joined by your host sonographer Shelley Guenther, who will showcase live scanning with the Clarius C7 Vet HD3 wireless scanner! With banter, humor, and a wealth of experience, these POCUS experts will leave you ready to spot the kiwi, the wagon wheel, and the Death Star and know exactly what to do about it!

Julie Burnage began her career as a Radiographer in North West England in the early 1980s, moving to North Wales in 1987. She started her ultrasound training in 1988 while also training to be a teacher to share her passion for ultrasound. In 1995, Julie founded an ultrasound company offering diagnostic scans in GP surgeries and clinics, advocating for ‘care closer to home’ despite skepticism from the imaging community. With support from forward-thinking radiologists, the business grew, eventually merging with another provider in 2013 and being acquired by venture capitalists in 2020.
