The amniotic fluid index (AFI) is an estimate of amniotic fluid volume in a pregnant uterus. The uterine cavity is divided into 4 quadrants and the vertical diameter of the largest pocket in each quadrant is measured.
hi my name's esther i'm going to be showing you how to do an amniotic fluid index on your patient today once you have one of the quadrants on the screen you would freeze the image bring up your caliper using the measurement tools in the lower left hand side i'm going to select quadrant one and measure this pocket of fluid not to include the umbilical cord i would take a picture move up to the right upper quadrant freeze the image and again select my measurement tools on the bottom left and go to quadrant two once i've taken a picture of that i would move to the left upper quadrant for my next measurement i would freeze my image go to my measurement tools again and do my third quadrant of fluid now for the last quadrant i move down to the left lower quadrant find my pocket of fluid freeze the image go to my measurement tools in the bottom left hand side select quadrant four perform my measurement and now you can see the afi in the left upper hand corner you
