POCUS in Cardiac Arrest

Miles Randell

Central pulses can often be faint or weak in the setting of cardiac arrest. A quick scan of the heart can easily detect presence or absence of cardiac activity during pulse checks.

Specialties: Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, EMS, Rural
Applications: Cardiac
so one of the benefits of ultrasound and prehospital Care is the ability to search for myocardial wall movement and cardiac arrest it's actually quite difficult to determine if someone is genuinely in cardiac arrest in the prehospital setting and that's where this device really comes into play so we're going to take a look at a parnal view here lots of gel so nice hot summer's day and turn the screen on here from the scanner which is really handy and let's get a good view so now we can see myocardial wall movement we can see good concentric movement of the heart so we know in this case we don't need to continue with CPR and we're able to just transport this patient to the hospital and monitor on route as opposed to not seeing myocardial wall movement and knowing that we need to continue with CPR or perhaps discontinu resuscitation
