Third Trimester: Locate Fetus and Placenta

As pregnancy progresses toward term, it’s important to determine the fetal position, and to confirm that the placenta is not low-lying.  Watch Dr. Dehaeck’s ultrasound technique to confirm both.

so we have our lovely patient in for her 36-week antenatal visit and at this visit i'm wanting to make sure that baby is head down or confirmed position so we're going to do a scan at the bedside to look at fetal position um as well as placental location so we're starting transversely we can see right away baby's head down so you can see the skull bones there so now we're going to determine which way uh baby's body is lying i'm scanning up the maternal right so you can see baby's spine is to the maternal right you can see the heart beating there nicely we're coming across the top so babies lying bum up here and then we can curve around and see the hip bones legs you're probably getting lots of kicks upper in the left quadrant upper quadrant here so now i'm going to scan through to have a look at the placental location you can see the placental edge here and then scanning up the placenta is definitely anterior and doesn't appear to be low so with the bedside scan we've been able to confirm that baby's vertex or head down and that the placenta is anterior and doesn't appear to be low you
