hi now let's talk about gain gain is one of the most commonly used terms in ultrasound and generally what it means is the overall brightness of your image when you adjust gain you are amplifying or decreasing the strength of the sound beam coming back to the ultrasound scanner sound interacts in different tissues at different levels and so that gain may need to be adjusted depending on the strength of the signal coming back to the scanner so for example when I'm looking at this ultrasound image we are seeing structures that are very dark that are black we're seeing bright gray we're seeing a darker gray those are things that you will get used to seeing and characterizing they should look a certain way now because we all look a little bit different under ultrasound sometimes we may need to increase that gain or brighten our image now what that can do though is fill in dark areas that are supposed to be black falsely conversely if we have our gain too low we're not getting any signal coming back to the scanner and our image is way too dark so by selecting the correct preset that will get you close to where you need to be with your gain settings but adjusting the gain will optimize your image just a little bit better so that you can see things more clearly now on the claras app there's an auto gain setting that is adjusting the gain for you as you scan if you like to take more control you can turn that off and then you can fine-tune the near field the far field or the overall gain to your liking so practice with that optimize your image as best you can with the gain for better results
