[VIDEO] Dr. Tom Cook Recommends Handheld Wireless Ultrasound for Emergency Medicine

As an experienced ultrasound user and educator, it’s no surprise that Dr. Tom Cook typically uses ultrasound to examine all his patients during a shift in the Emergency Room. Although he and his team have access to seven cart-based ultrasound systems in his trauma one center, he often carries a Clarius ultrasound scanner in his pocket for quick exams and to guide vascular access.

When ultrasound is in your lab coat and you can pull it out of your pocket and you can take your phone out and suddenly get this great exam, you’ll just find you’re using it a lot more,” he explains. “I tend to use a phased array almost exclusively because I can cover the chest, I can cover the thorax, I can cover the abdomen, I can cover the retroperitoneum, I can cover the pelvis and at least nudge myself in the right direction.”

A Clarius Advisory Board member since the company introduced its first-generation handheld scanners in 2016, Dr. Cook is typically an early user of Clarius products and has helped the development team to fine tune the systems for emergency medicine. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Cook to discuss his experience with using the Clarius HD3 phased array scanner. Watch this brief video to learn what he had to say.

Learn from an Ultrasound Master Educator

Dr. Cook founded 3rd Rock Ultrasound, an education company designed to help all healthcare providers integrate ultrasound into their practices more than 25 years ago. Through 3rd Rock Ultrasound, he and his colleagues have offered 1500 accredited ultrasound courses classes to teach thousands of physicians, nurse practitioners, PAs, EMS personnel and medical students to use point of care ultrasound (POCUS) to improve patient care.

We’ve been fortunate to partner with Dr. Cook to present a series of free Cardiac POCUS webinars. We invite you to register now for the next webinar: Cardiac POCUS Part 2: Techniques for Assessing Right Ventricular Function. In this one-hour webinar, you’ll learn how to accurately assess for signs of right ventricular strain and dysfunction in your patients with chest pain, dyspnea, or unstable vital signs.

Dr. Cook will present real cases demonstrating healthy and pathological images to help you develop the skills to generate and interpret ultrasound images in the ER, hospital ward, or intensive care unit. He will be joined by emergency physician Oron Frenkel and sonographer Shelley Guenther for live scanning to demonstrate practical skills.

Be sure to watch our first Cardiac POCUS webinar with Dr. Cook at your convenience.
