Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has become one of the most significant advances in modern out-of-hospital healthcare, yet successful implementation requires far more than purchasing equipment or teaching image acquisition.

Wade MacPherson
Wade MacPherson currently serves as Deputy Chief of Professional Standards with Haliburton County Paramedic Service and as an Operations Commander (Casual) with the County of Renfrew Paramedic Service. He is an Advanced Care Paramedic, educator, and healthcare leader with a particular interest in developing people, teams, and systems to support clinical innovation. Wade has worked across a diverse range of practice environments, from remote and resource-limited northern communities to large, complex urban healthcare systems, with experience spanning frontline paramedicine, community paramedicine, resuscitation, education, and operational leadership. He is recognized as a certified independent practitioner and instructor in point-of-care ultrasound through the Canadian Point of Care Ultrasound Society and has been involved in Paramedic POCUS education since 2017. Wade played a key role in developing the County of Renfrew Paramedic Service’s POCUS program and has since taught, presented, and consulted on POCUS across Ontario, and in Alberta, PEI, Nova Scotia, and the United States. He is particularly interested in the challenge of moving innovation beyond the technology itself—building the people, culture, processes, and systems required to make new clinical capabilities safe and sustainable.
