Ultrasound of the Peroneal Tendons

Marc Schmitz

This is a video demonstration of how to scan the peroneal tendons – peroneus longus and brevis – to assess for tendinopathy, fluid, and avulsion fractures.

Specialties: MSK, Podiatry
Applications: MSK
to scan the peronal tendance the patient is in suine position again with the foot a little bit outside the table and with the leg a little bit in a internal rotation in the hip this is the lateral malus right there and I'm going to place the transducer right behind the lateral mulus and if we do so uh we can see the that this is the anatomy visualized uh we can see the lateral mulus uh right there um and right next with we can see the peronal tendons uh and the short perenial muscle so this is the ponus bravous muscle this is in fact the ponus bravest tendon and this is the ponus longest tendon and they are situated in this tendon sheet right there this retinaculum as well uh so we're going to search for fluid collections signs of aitis going to search for tendinopathies or maybe even tendon tearing so look for shape changes echogenicity changes and irregularity changes from here we're going to follow the prial tendons to the next step and in this next step we are still at the level of the lulus right there uh but in the depth we can see the ccanal fibar ligament uh on top of the calcan FI ligament are indeed the peronal tendons right there so this is is also a spot where sometimes the tendons uh are affected then searching uh for the peronal tubic so this is the pronal tubal with an either side a pronal tendon so this is one and that is one the tendon or the pronal tubic splitting both the pronal tendons because then the long one goes into the depth uh and the short one is going superficial towards the base of metal the fifth metalle bone here as well search for fluid changes uh for echogenicity changes I mean and also changes in cross-section and thickness in the end we're going to look for the peronal tendon the short peronal tendon the bravous at its insertion at the base of the fifth metas so here you can see the base of the fifth metat tasal and then we can see the tendon inserting right there to the Bone so you can look for evulsion fractures maybe of the bone but also of tendon tearing and tendon uh tendonopathy
