When breast cancer responds well to neoadjuvent chemotherapy, tumours can be difficult to identify pre-surgery. In this video Dr. Ahmed uses high-resolution ultrasound in his office to locate marker clips and proceed with surgical planning. Research recent found that “ultrasound-assisted breast surgery significantly increases the possibility of tumor-free margins and therefore reduces the risk of reoperations,” recommending that “ultrasound should be available in every breast surgery operating room.”

The use of intraoperative ultrasound “has been transformed from being the means of localizing non-palpable lesions to an instrument yielding a reduced number of positive resection margins, with a smaller volume of healthy breast tissue excided around tumor, by making the excision of the tumor optimal and objectively measurable.” In this Clarius Classroom video, Dr. Ahmed uses high-resolution ultrasound in the operating room to locate multiple marker clips ultrasound in a patient with breast tumours to reduce the excision of margins intra-operatively.
