hi my name is shelly and today i'm going to show you how to do a basic thyroid ultrasound so i'm going to go into the applications menu and select thyroid this ensures that we're going to get the best imaging possible of the thyroid gland i like to start midline on the patient's neck so that we can get a really nice view of the isthmus of the thyroid and here i can increase or decrease my depth to make sure that i'm including the entire gland so i'm going to sweep from upper to lower through the isthmus when i'm happy i'm not seeing any abnormalities or i just want to document normal i'm going to freeze the image and take a picture so let's head on over to the right lobe of the thyroid and again from here i'm going to sweep from the superior aspect of the right lobe take an image go down to the mid portion and at this point i'm also going to do a measurement so if i go into the measurement icon i'm just going to go do a general distance measurement i'm going to measure the ap diameter as well as the transverse diameter this will give us a good indication if anything is enlarged we'll take a picture and next i'll head down to the lower pole of the right lobe of the thyroid we'll take an image of that now from here i want to look at the thyroid in long axis so i'm going to rotate the scanner 90 degrees and here we can see the nice image of the entire right lobe of the thyroid and again i'm going to scan from medial all the way to the trachea to lateral all the while looking for abnormalities when i'm happy there's nothing there i'm going to freeze the image and we're going to do a long axis measurement of the right lobe from the superior to inferior pull we'll take an image and the last thing i'm going to do is see what the blood flow is like in the thyroid by turning on the color doppler i can place the color box over the thyroid just to make sure that there is blood flow there and that i'm not seeing any masses we can take that image as well and then we'll do the same on the left side you
