hello and welcome to this case brought to you by first opinion veterinary ultrasound I'm Dr Camilla Edwards so this was a female an entire female 11 month old Dalmatian dog who'd had an accidental mating a Circa 40 days prior to this scam so we were able to confirm pregnancy on this scan we can see the puppy's head up here spine and ribs here we can see the heart beating and we can see the abdominal organs here so frequently when we're scanning puppies we might be at the point where they are ready to be born and we want to be able to make that decision about whether they need to have a cesarean or not and one of the aspects of that is assessing whether there's fetal distress or not and so we want to be able to get a heart rate and we can do that with ultrasound so here we've placed M mode so this straight line over the heart here and we can see this line along here which it then over time and we can see this marker Loop moving along the top which is registering the time um as it moves along and here we can see this first bit up here is this first bit up here and we've got our heart beating which is this line here and then everything below is everything below here so we can really see that heart beating and as we move along in time so here we've reduced our depth to optimize for this heartbeat here so we can see the movement of the heart along here and most machines will have a setting where we can record the fetal heart rate so to do that we just need to freeze our M mode image and then take two measurements so here I've taken two points at the same point of the heartbeat so we can see the heart Contracting and relaxing Contracting and relaxing so take them at two points that are the same you need to know whether your particular machine looks at one heartbeat or two to get an accurate reading and here we've got a heart rate of 207 beats per minute with this which the machine has helpfully worked out for us here we can see that close-up of that heart beating so here we can see the fetus again we can see this heart beating um and the abdominal contents here and one of the things that tells us that this fetus is not ready to be born is because we can't see any wall layering in the intestines and that comes very very late in pregnancy that we are able to see that wall layering um and that that's an indicator that if we can't see that all layering we are not near enough to perform a cesarean so a great outcome pregnancy was confirmed
