First Trimester Fetus Viability

Dr. Ulrike Dehaeck

In this video Dr. Dehaeck will check for fetal viability in a patient who has had cramping and bleeding in the first trimester. By quickly locating the fetal heart and watching for heart motion, she can confidently confirm viability. The fetal heart rate can be accurately measured using m-mode.

our patients come into clinic she's about 11 weeks by last menstrual period and she's worried because she's had some cramping and bleeding so we're going to do a bedside ultrasound and have a look at the viability of the fetus check the fetal heart rate and mode as well so i'm placing the probe here transversely just above the suprapubic bone you can see a full maternal bladder and we're scanning up from this cervix and i can see the fetus come into view here i can already see babies moving and the fetal heart rate looks like it's moving there so we're going to just pinch in a little bit to zoom and then we take a short video here there we go and now we're going to switch to m mode and actually get a fetal heart rate so moving my caliper here just over the fetal heart there we go we've got a nice tracing so i'm freezing and then i'm switching to my tools and measuring the fetal heart so we get a heartbeat of 160 which is really normal for this gestation so that looks great so we've demonstrated a viable fetus with a normal fetal heart rate at about 11 weeks you
