How to Hold the Scanner

Shelley Guenther, CRGS, CRCS

hi my name is Shelley and today I'd like to talk to you about how to hold your ultrasound scanner or transducer locating structures in the face can be challenging just because the structures are all very small so you want to make sure that you have a good grip on your scanner at the bottom of it with a couple of fingers and then anchor your hand on your patient so that you can be steady and as well control your scanner easily so I'm looking at the chin jaw and what I want to do is locate this nice big facial artery here now I say big but it's actually just a couple of millimeters so I'm going to unfreeze and I'm going to just rotate the scanner here and again I've got two fingers on the probe I'm resting my other finger on my model just to stabilize and we're doing just some subtle little movements to try to locate that vessel so we're seeing the vessel in the middle of the screen but even the tiniest movement changes the look of my image and I fall off of that vessel so very important to Anchor your hand so that you're nice and steady conversely if you're holding your scanner at the very top it's very difficult to control your motions and to stay steady so try to get into the habit of holding your scanner at the very bottom anchoring your finger locating your Target and staying on it to optimize your image
