i'm oran frankel an emergency physician point-of-care ultrasound is an incredibly powerful tool to help find my vascular targets and guide vascular access in real time to perform this procedure i'll use a linear scanner here on a venous preset once i identify potential target vessels i can do a few maneuvers to ensure the safety of my procedure first is i'll do simple compression and make sure that it truly is a vein with compressibility versus arterial that shouldn't compress and i can see its pulsations i can identify surrounding structures such as the nerve bundle here around the vessels and lastly i can put on color flow to really identify my arterial versus venous flow and ensure that i haven't misdirected my procedure at the wrong vessel once i've confidently identified my target i can then use the same ultrasound once my setup is ready to guide the procedure and watch my needle enter the vessel in real time
