hi I'm Virginia Robinson and I'm a full-service family physician in Fernie BC and we're going to look at the Achilles tendon the Achilles tendon is a very helpful ultrasonographic exam when you see someone with ankle pain or trauma or anyone who is having difficulty pronating or plantar flexing their ankle I like to start at the bottom where I can see the calcaneal bone that's that bright white line casting a shadow and attached to it is your Achilles tendon it's an extremely superficial structure I like to keep my pinky over the Achilles tendon as I follow the length of it all the way up to the musculotendinous junction should you see a rupture in this area the longitudinal fibers will be interrupted by an area of Blackness or Echo lucency once I reach the musculotendinous junction I turn my probe in transverse and follow the Achilles tendon down in transverse once again looking for any deformities within the longitudinal fibers that make up the Achilles tendon this concludes the ultrasonographic exam of the Achilles tendon foreign
