i'm oran frankel an emergency physician scanning the ivc can provide immense information in assessing patients with signs of dehydration dyspnea or abnormal vital signs to perform the scan here i'm using a curvilinear scanner on the abdomen preset i like to do this scan by starting in the sagittal plane with the middle of the scanner right on the xified process aimed up into the thorax and just a brief slide over to the patient's right will help that ibc pop right into view in the longitudinal plane a bit of rotation is sometimes required to really make sure i get the full thickness and diameter of the ivc and then once here i can just sit and watch it through its respiratory variation to determine if it's fat or flat or maybe indeterminate and in that short scan i can gather an immense amount of information to help me facilitate my diagnosis and management of this patient
