A new generation of physical therapy students at Belmont University is getting a leg up in their education by incorporating portable ultrasound technology into their training. Using Clarius handheld ultrasound devices, students are gaining a deeper understanding of human anatomy and improving their diagnostic skills in real-time. This hands-on approach is changing how future physical therapists learn and practice, and Belmont is at the forefront of this educational shift.

Beyond the Textbook: Enhancing Learning with Real-Time Visualization
For physical therapy students, understanding the complex layers of the body—from skin and fat to tendons, muscles, and bone—is crucial. Unlike with traditional textbook learning, using Clarius devices, students can see these tissues live.
Hannah Hassan, a Doctorate of Physical Therapy (SPT) student, feels the learning curve is significantly shorter with the side-by-side views provided by Clarius T-Mode.
Being able to see the multiple layers side-by-side was very helpful in learning,” Hannah explains. “I felt like I learned more today in class compared to just taking pictures and spending a lot of time on my own. »
Video Demonstration: T-ModeTM for Shoulder
Belmont students are using Clarius T-Mode™ during ultrasound training sessions. The Clarius Intelligence tool overlays distinctive colors, patterns, and labels to instantly identify and differentiate anatomy in the rotator cuff, which is helpful when learning how to assess shoulder ultrasound anatomy. Watch this 1-minute video demonstration by Shelley Guenther to see T-Mode in action.
Caden Johnson, another Belmont student, also experienced the benefits of T-Mode firsthand. « Being able to have the T-mode to color-code everything by different kinds of tissues and also being able to pause it and have it name every tissue for you, I think that can be so useful because that can help you orient yourself so much quicker. »
Bridging Education and Clinical Practice
Mastering ultrasound technology during training means Belmont students can enter the clinical world with a valuable skill set.
Belmont student Isabella Gati appreciates the early exposure to ultrasound. « I’d like to think that Belmont is definitely at the forefront of using ultrasound, » she says. « I think it’s helped us get a better appreciation of body structures, and I think it is coming into the PT field. »
Students also believe that using ultrasound will enhance patient interaction and education. « I see myself with patients being able to begin to give them answers a little bit quicker… but more importantly to confirm my own diagnostic assumptions or predictions, » says Madison Wisted.
