As Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) have become more popular, studies are proliferating on the value of ultrasound guidance for IUD insertion. For example, the Journal of Gynecology Obstetrics and Human Reproduction recently published an article about a randomized trial on 400 women with retroverted flexed RVF uteri.
The study concluded that ultrasound guidance during insertion resulted in significantly lower pain scores, easier insertion, and shorter procedure times.
Dr. Ulrike Dehaeck, MSc, MD, FRCSC, regularly uses point-of-care ultrasound to confirm IUD localization and directly after IUD insertion to confirm placement. Last year, she switched from a bulky cart-based system to the ultra-portable Clarius wireless ultrasound system for her busy practice.
Recently, Dr. Dehaeck examined a patient to confirm IUD placement. We had the opportunity to record a 60-second video tutorial of the pelvic exam using the Clarius C3 HD3 in which she demonstrates where to place the scanner for sagittal and transverse views of an IUD in position. Watch the video to see her technique.
